Suwig Guitars | Luthiers
The story about Suwig Guitar Workshop began when the founder: Hardjo Suwignyo started to make wooden musical instruments such as Violin, Cello, Contra Bass, Guitar, Ukulele in a town called Surokarto (Central Java, Indonesia). Hadjo Suwignyo was known as the first luthier around the area and was able to sell the handcrafted musical instruments to few local Chinese merchants in Semarang. The superb craftsmanship had made the Suwignyo family more popular in Surokarto after one of the family member had a chance to learn more about guitar making in Holland as the part of the business deal with the Dutch around 1930′s.
A massive flood that happened in Surokarto around 1960′s was the lowest moment for the Suwignyos since all of the wood supplies on their storage were washed away.
The recovery was not easy, after surviving the flood, not all the Suwignyos were into guitar making.
Hardjo Suwignyo had 5 sons, and 3 of them are now still continuing the family heritage especially in guitar making.
The ups and downs of a guitar making industry finally brought Marjanto Suwignyo to be the only son that lives in Jakarta from the 80s until today.
The journey from Surokarto to Jakarta was not smooth, the rocky roads along the way had forced him to make other more commercial wooden product like furniture and others to survive.
Until the eldest son named Harto Suwignyo finished the University degree in Jakarta (majoring in Technical Faculty) at the year 2000, the heritage of guitar making in the family is taken to the next level..
The workshop was then named SUWIG GUITAR WORKSHOP, still producing a quality custom guitars for indonesian market and abroad.
